Marie Losier (b. France, 1972) is a filmmaker and artist who has worked in New York City for 23 years and has shown her films and videos at museums, galleries, biennials, and festivals. Losier studied American literature at the University of Nanterre (France, Master's, 1995) and Fine Arts at Hunter College, City University of New York (MFA, 2003). She has made a number of film portraits of avant-garde directors, musicians, and composers, such as the Kuchar brothers, Guy Maddin, Richard Foreman, Tony Conrad, Genesis P-Orridge, Alan Vega, Peaches, and Felix Kubin. Whimsical, poetic, dreamlike, and unconventional, her films explore the life and work of these artists.
Losier's films are shown at prestigious festivals, museums, and biennials such as The Cannes Film Festival, The Venice Mostra, The Berlinale, IDFA, Tribeca, CPH:DOX, Bafici, Cinéma du Réel, The Tate Modern, MoMA, Le Palais de Tokyo, Le Centre Georges Pompidou, and La Cinémathèque Française. She was included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial (NYC). She had a retrospective of her films at MoMA — the Museum of Modern Art — in 2018 in New York, and all of her films were acquired for the museum's archives that same year. She also presented a mid-career retrospective at Le Jeu de Paume, Museum of Contemporary Art in Paris, in 2019 (www.jeudepaume.org), as well as at the Cinémathèque of Athens (2019) and the Cinémathèque of Brussels (2021).
Losier's first feature film was a portrait of pioneering musician-artist Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) and their partner, Lady Jaye. The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2011, winning the Caligari and Teddy Awards. She also won the Grand Prize at Indielisboa, the Prix Louis Marcorelles, and the Prix des Bibliothèques at Cinéma du Réel; the film was released in France, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and the USA.
In 2013/14, Losier was awarded the prestigious DAAD Residency Award in Berlin and the Guggenheim Award to work on her new feature film, Cassandro The Exotico!, a portrait of the celebrated Mexican wrestler Saul Almendariz. Cassandro The Exotico!, produced by Tamara Films, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2018 (ACID Cannes). It was released in France in 2018, and in 2019 in the US — premiering at the Metrograph in NYC — and in Canada.
She premiered a new film at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in August 2019: a feature on the German composer and musician Felix Kubin, titled Felix in Wonderland. The film was produced by Ecce Films.
She had an exhibition in collaboration with Pauline Curnier Jardin at the Fondation Ricard in May 2019 (www.fondation-entreprise-ricard.com). In 2020, she joined the Anne Barrault Gallery and had her first solo exhibition there, presenting drawings and film installations (www.galerieannebarrault.com). She also had solo shows at the Film Gallery in Paris (2021) and the Solar Gallery in Vila do Conde, Portugal (2022), and was part of a group show at the Mac Val Museum (Histoires Vraies, 2023).
She presented a new solo exhibition at the Anne Barrault Gallery in June/July 2023, and a solo exhibition at the IFC Gallery in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in February 2024 (Feb–May). She had a new solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Thiers, Le Creux de l'Enfer — Kino Volcano, in 2024–2025 (in collaboration with ARLT), as well as at the contemporary art space Le Transpalette in Bourges, curated by Julie Crenn (Hooky Wooky, 2025). In 2026, she was included in a group show at La Maison Populaire de Montreuil, and in September she will present a new solo exhibition at the Anne Barrault Gallery.
She premiered a new film portrait, Barking in the Dark, on the San Francisco cult band The Residents, at the Rotterdam Film Festival (2025). The film was produced by Barberousse Films. After 17 years in the making, she has just finished a film portrait of the singer-performer Peaches, Peaches Goes Bananas, produced by Tamara Films and co-produced by Michigan Films. The film premiered at the Venice Mostra (2024) and was released in cinemas in France (Norte Films Distribution), Switzerland, the USA, and Portugal (2025).
She is currently making a new film portrait of the dancer-choreographer from Cape Verde, Marlene Monteiro Freitas. She has been filming the process of creating Freitas's new piece, which opened the Festival d'Avignon in 2025: NÔT (https://festival-avignon.com/en/edition-2025/programme/not-351612).
For the past nine years, Marie Losier has taught film at the Fine Arts MFA program at HEAD — Haute École d'Art et de Design — in Geneva, Switzerland (www.hesge.ch/head/en/school/about).
In 2025–2026, Marie Losier was the guest artist-professor at the contemporary art school Le Fresnoy (https://www.lefresnoy.net/en/ecole/artiste-professeur-invite/152/).
